MBKU Receives $10,000 Grant from Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian Community Benefit Program to Cover Prosthetic Contact Lenses & Eyes for Vulnerable Populations

Marshall B. Ketchum University

Anyone can be at risk for losing an eye or experiencing damage to their eye. A penetrating injury to the eye or disease can result in a loss of visual function or cosmetic disfigurement. Marshall B. Ketchum University offers one of very few prosthetic lens and eye centers in Southern California and with the $ 10,000 grant from Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian Community Benefit Program, qualified low-income patients will receive much needed assistance in off-setting these costs.

Most insurance providers will not cover the cost for fitting a prosthetic eye, but may cover partially for the lens. The cost of prosthetic eyes can be prohibitive at just under $ 2,000 per eye, whereas prosthetic lenses can reach costs of approximately $ 800 per lens, a significant burden to many patients, even those with some insurance coverage, said Dawn Lam, O.D., Associate Professor at Marshall B. Ketchum Universitys Southern California College of Optometry. “As a result, the cost of care is shouldered by the patient. This grant reduces barriers to care for our under-served patients.

The Prosthetic Lens and Eye Program at Marshall B. Ketchum University offers customized solutions for patients who have suffered damage to their eye due to injury or disease. For patients who still have their eye, but have damage to the pupil or iris, a prosthetic contact lens can be fitted to improve problems with glare, can help with light sensitivity, while potentially improving visual function. A prosthetic eye is used when an eye is damaged and removed. By fitting patients with a prosthetic that cosmetically matches their seeing eye this helps to hide a disfigurement and improve quality of life.

At the University Eye Center at Fullerton, we are able to provide the full scope of careboth for the eye that is in need of a prosthetic device as well as the seeing eye. MBKU is able to provide patients with the exact lens they need, said Tim Edrington O.D., M.S., Professor and Chief of the Cornea and Contact Lens Service at MBKUs University Eye Center at Fullerton. This process may take several visits to ensure the proper device and fit. MBKU utilizes a team approach in which a highly qualified doctor of optometry is teamed with an intern or resident doctor to provide patient care during these appointments. The information shared and lessons learned prove to be extremely valuable for our future health care practitioners.

MBKU is proud to count this and other private foundation grants, corporate contributions and individual gifts in its first comprehensive fundraising campaign. ACHIEVING 20|20: The Campaign for MBKU will make its official public launch next year. Dedicated alumni, grateful patients and generous community supporters will help MBKU reimagine the future of health care education. How to Get at the Roots of Memory Slips, from the June 2015 Harvard Men’s Health Watch

Memory slips? Consider these seven common causes of forgetfulness

Age-related forgetfulness, although annoying, is common and essentially harmless. Nevertheless, pinpointing its exact cause isn’t always easy. But according to the June 2015 Harvard Men’s Health Watch, asking some simple questions can reveal some of the reversible causes of memory problems and provide the basis for a helpful conversation with a doctor.

“Having an honest discussion about memory and getting tested may help open up discussions about other areas of health too,” says Dr. David Hsu, a geriatric psychiatrist at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

After middle age, many people start to worry that simple forgetfulness may be the harbinger of Alzheimer’s disease. But sometimes the causes are more mundane. They include fatigue from an unrecognized medical condition, the effects of sedating medications, lack of good-quality sleep or regular exercise, and the effects of chronic stress.

Dr. Hsu notes that a perceived change in memory performance may simply be due to a slight slowdown in thinking speed that comes with aging. “Remembering takes a little more time, but this is entirely normal,” Dr. Hsu says. Getting frustrated with memory slips won’t make them stop; actually, it could make it harder to remember things.

Researchers from Boston University Believe Coffee May Help Fight Gum Disease and Increasing Benefits With Tylers Coffee

Tucson, AZ. (PRWEB) February 24, 2015

Coffee contains antioxidants. Antioxidants fight gum disease. Does coffee, then, help fight gum disease? That is the question researchers at Boston Univ. Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine explored in a study published in the August 2014 issue of the Journal of Periodontology.

This is the first long-term study of its kind that has investigated the association between coffee consumption and periodontal disease in humans, Ng added.

The study was conducted by researchers at the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine scientists. They used data from 1,152 men in the US Department of Veterans Affairs Dental Longitudinal Study (DLS).

The researchers found that coffee intake was associated with a small but statistically significant reduction in teeth and bone loss. The team said that coffee consumption might keep gums healthy at least in adult males.

We found that coffee consumption did not have an adverse effect on periodontal health, and, instead, may have protective effects against periodontal disease, said Nathan Ng of the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine, lead author of the study.

So what does this mean for us coffee drinkers? We will have to see what the data provides but it is highly possible your daily cup helps fights some away harmful effects of gum disease. The team plans on using data from diverse, groups to see whether or not there is a link between coffee consumption and gum disease.

Well while we are waiting for the research to provide a final answer we can know one thing for sure. Tylers Coffee, as an acid-free coffee, can at least help prevent deteriorating & yellowing of teeth normally caused by a acidic coffee. Happy brewing!

Dentists in the US Industry Market Research Report from IBISWorld Has Been Updated

New York, NY (PRWEB) January 01, 2014

The Dentists industry knew the drill over the past five years and has thus benefited from favorable demographic trends, technological advances and mounting awareness of oral hygiene. Furthermore, private dental clinics were one of the nation’s most profitable industries during the economic downturn. This profitability is partially attributed to industry operators being less dependent on reimbursement from healthcare insurers, as many patients pay for dental treatments out of pocket. However, better preventive care at home has slightly suppressed revenue growth. Improved toothbrushes and formulas for toothpastes that promote tooth enamel health have slightly mitigated demand for traditional dental services. According to IBISWorld Industry Analyst Sarah Turk, During the five years to 2013, IBISWorld expects revenue to grow at an annualized rate of 1.5% to $ 118.8 billion, including 3.1% growth in 2013.

Meanwhile, the cost of dental education has soared over the past five years. Weighed down with debt, dental graduates have been hindered from starting practices, which require significant capital investments. Rapid advancements in technology have also made it expensive to cover overhead costs for dental office equipment. These factors have led to the growth of dental practice management companies (DPMCs), large companies that provide services for multiple dental offices. Because DPMCs also buy independent practices, their growing dominance has led to industry consolidation. In the five years to 2013, the number of industry operators is expected to increase at an annualized rate of 0.4% to 164,966. Continuous consolidation will be one of several factors that are anticipated to bolster industry profit margins from 2013 to 2018.

The five-year outlook for dentists is promising, with favorable demographic trends, an improving economic environment and growing access to dental insurance boosting revenue over the period. IBISWorld forecasts revenue to increase in the five years to 2018. Revenue is projected to jump in 2014 as healthcare reform legislation increases the number of insured individuals, says Turk. In addition, as the job market improves, increased dental coverage from employers and rising disposable income will result in more patient visits. DPMCs will continue to penetrate the industry and grow in size as more dentists recognize the benefits of spreading costs across practices.

In 2013, IBISWorld estimates there are 172,218 dentist offices and clinics operating in the United States and generating annual revenue of $ 118.8 billion. No major companies dominate this highly fragmented industry. Nearly 93.1% of dentist offices have fewer than 20 employees, based on the latest available US Census Bureau’s data from 2010. According to the US Surgeon General, most private dental practices consist of either one dentist (68.7%) or two (19.6%). The remainder (11.7%) includes group practices of three or more dentists who share expenses and revenue.

Torrance, CA (PRWEB) February 22, 2013

SPHER removes the complexity and stress from breach-related compliance while helping mitigate potential litigation against healthcare providers and lowering insurance premiums for malpractice and cyber security.

Being 100 percent HIPAA compliant is very important, said Gina Shearer, Privacy Officer of MRI Centers. SPHER has allowed us to effortlessly and affordably meet that goal by handling the EHR-centric aspects of compliance. Our patients can feel more secure with the knowledge that we have done all we can to protect their private health data.

Health Insurance Plan Reimbursement from Auto Wreck Settlement

Health Insurance Plan Reimbursement from Auto Wreck Settlement

When you signed up for health insurance at work did they tell you that if you get a in car wreck, you will have to pay your own medical expenses? Burt True, a lawyer with True & Associates, discusses insurance subrogation. Subrogation is when your health insurance plan claims they get paid back for the medical expenses they paid before you get paid for your injuries. Missouri (and other states) prohibit the assignment of personal-injury claims. In a recent case, Scroggins v. Red Lobster (2010), a woman agreed to a settlement with Red Lobster after she fell there. But, her employer, St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, claimed that its health insurance plan gets paid back out of her settlement. The court said, “Missouri courts have never allowed a provider to be reimbursed for medical expenses that the insured recovers in a settlement from a liable third party under a lien theory, and we declined to do so now.” But, your health insurance plan does not stop there. They want a way around state law. So they go to the feds. They get qualified under a federal law called ERISA. ERISA stands for Employee Retirement Income Security Act. Since federal law trumps state law, the health insurance plan claims it can still get paid back even though state law prevents this. Now it gets complicated. ERISA does preempt state law, but there are exceptions listed in the federal law. One exception is state insurance law. But then there is an exception to the exception called the Deemer Clause

An all-natural botanical hand crafted cleaning soap is soothing and organic. It’s composed from chemical reaction between water, lye and oil. Various kinds of oil are employed in the making of botanical soaps. Each type of oil possesses its own beneficial characteristics which is the primary reason that a hand crafted botanical soap is vastly better than chemical options.

The problem with commercial soaps that are mass-produced and may be purchased from shops or grocery stores is that they can not be regarded as as soaps whatsoever. They’re really fluids, composed of petroleum, for instance gasoline or any other type of oil. Because of this harsh chemical soap causes irritation of your skin oftentimes. People frequently have a problem with extreme irritation of the skin when working with these kinds of petroleum based cleaning soaps. The organic hands crafted soaps use glycerine as the primary active incredient. This really is the most prominent ingredient that distinguishes an all natural hand crafted botanical soap from harsh chemical-based cleaning soaps. The commercial cleaning soap producers usually extract glycerine to be used in creams, however a high quality organic hand crafted cleaning cleaning soap will almost always have glycerine within it. Since glycerine can draw moisture in form the air, it can help the skin to remain soft and moist for an extended period of time, which generally doesn’t happen when using detergent based, mass-produced soaps.

Buying soap is something with which folks dont often spend even second of deliberation on. However, botanical soap is considered by some to be a significant item that will help the skin glow.
